Is laminate herringbone harder to fit than plank?

It takes longer, but it needs no adhesive. You work from a centre line using left and right boards alternately, and the perimeter cuts are the slow part. Allow noticeably more time than a straight lay, and more waste — 15–20% rather than the 8–12% a plank floor needs, on the manufacturer guidance we can cite.

How many packs will I need?

Each pack covers 1.92 m². Measure the room, add 15–20% for waste because herringbone perimeters generate more offcuts, divide by 1.92 and round up. The calculator on this page does it at 15%.

Will it look like real wood?

It is a printed decor on an HDF core, so it will not have the tone variation of the oak floors on this list. What it does have is the pattern, which is what most people are actually looking at. Order the sample: this is the floor where seeing it in your own light changes the most.

How does it compare with the Oxford Herringbone floors?

Oxford is engineered oak with a 3mm oak wear layer, so the surface is real timber and can be refinished. Canterbury is laminate: harder-wearing on the surface, but a decor rather than a wood, and it cannot be sanded. Oxford costs twice as much per square metre.

Herringbone without the herringbone budget

Canterbury is the reason a laminate sits third in a catalogue otherwise made of oak. Customers here are buying the pattern, not the material: herringbone is what they want the room to look like, and this is the version that leaves budget for the rest of the room.

At 12mm the board feels solid underfoot rather than hollow, and the click fitting means no adhesive and no specialist tools. The decor is a greige oak — a grey-leaning warm neutral that sits well against both white and darker walls.

Fitter’s note: Set out from the centre line of the room, never from a wall. Herringbone shows every millimetre of drift, so dry-lay the first two rows before anything is committed.
