In depth
Choosing pale rigid vinyl
The pale end of the rigid vinyl range is where the material earns its place: a light oak look in the rooms, kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms, where a real pale oak would stain, swell or simply need more care than the room allows. Eleven BML floors sit in this band. Four are 5.2 mm planks at 181 mm by 1220 mm with a 0.3 mm wear layer: Natural Oak, Pale Oak, Truffle Oak and Light Oak. Four are 6.5 mm wide planks at 228 mm by 1524 mm with a 0.55 mm wear layer: White Oak, Ash, Poplar and Grey-beige Oak. Three are 6.5 mm herringbone blocks at 126 mm by 630 mm, also 0.55 mm: European Oak, Light Oak and Invisible Oak.
All eleven share the same construction: a solid polymer core, listed as waterproof, with the underlay attached, commercial grade, listed as compatible with underfloor heating, with a 25 year manufacturer's warranty. The choice is therefore format and tone. The 5.2 mm plank is the lighter-duty floor for bedrooms and living rooms; the 6.5 mm floors carry the heavier wear layer for hallways and kitchens, and the wide plank's longer boards read as a modern plank floor where the standard plank reads as a traditional one.
In practice
Within the tone there is more range than the name suggests. Pale Oak, Light Oak and Invisible Oak are the coolest and lightest; Natural Oak and European Oak carry the conventional warm oak colour; Truffle Oak and Grey-beige Oak sit at the warm-grey edge of the band and are the ones to look at if the walls are a warm white. Because the designs are printed, a box repeats its boards, and a floor reads more even than an oak floor of the same tone.
A pale floor shows dark marks, and that is true of vinyl as of oak; the difference is what it takes to remove them. A damp mop and a neutral cleaner are the routine, and the industry guidance on low-moisture cleaning, quoted below, is about protecting the joints rather than the surface.

Cleaning — the manufacturers’ own guidance
For multilayer modular floor coverings the MMFA requires low-moisture cleaning methods and states that pooling of liquid on the floor must be avoided under all circumstances.
“Absolutely avoid ponding in any case!”

Floor coverings over a warm water underfloor heating system are normally limited to a thermal resistance of R(λ,B) ≤ 0.15 m2K/W, which is also the worst permissible case used for system dimensioning in dwellings.
