Wood Flooring Care and Cleaning Guide

How to keep a wood floor looking right for decades: where the wear comes from, the cleaning routine that prevents it, what to avoid, and how the finish decides the repair.

Where the wear comes from

Almost all wear on a wood floor arrives on the soles of shoes. Grit is harder than any finish, it is dragged across the surface with every step, and it cuts fine scratches that dull the sheen long before anything wears through. Four sources account for nearly all of the damage a floor ever sees, and they are listed here in the order they cause it, not in the order people worry about them.

Grit on shoes
By far the largest cause. Harder than any finish and dragged across the surface with every step.
Furniture feet
Especially a felt pad that has picked up grit and now works like sandpaper.
Castors
Narrow hard wheels concentrate the weight of a chair into a tiny contact patch.
Dragging
One dragged appliance can leave a mark that no maintenance removes.
Good to know: Mats at every external door and frequent sweeping do more for a floor than any product you can buy, and they cost almost nothing.

Stop it at the door

This is the highest return action on the whole page and it is almost free.

Use a long mat, not a small one
Long enough for three or four steps. A short mat at the threshold catches only the first footfall.
One at every external door
Including the back door and the door from the garage, which are usually the grittiest.
Shake it out often
A saturated mat stops working and starts redistributing what it caught.
Sweep the hallway more than anywhere else
It is where everything arrives, and it is the room that shows wear first.

The cleaning routine that works

Cleaning a wood floor well is mostly about removing grit and using as little water as possible. Short, frequent and dry beats long, occasional and wet. Most floors that look tired have been mopped too much and swept too little.

Sweep or vacuum first, always
Use a soft brush head or a hard floor setting. A beater bar will mark the surface.

Mix the cleaner as directed
A cleaner made for your finish, at the stated dilution. More product is not better: excess leaves a film that attracts dirt and dulls the finish.

Wring the mop until it is barely damp
It should leave a film that dries within seconds, not a visible wet trail. Standing water finds the joints and opens them.

Work along the boards
Along the length rather than across. It follows the grain and leaves fewer streaks.

Let it dry properly
If the floor is still wet a minute later, there was too much water on the mop.
Important: No steam mops unless the manufacturer specifically allows them. Steam drives moisture into the joints under pressure, which is the fastest way to damage a wood floor.

What to avoid

Each of these is common, and each one shortens the life of a floor.

A soaking wet mop
The single most common cause of open joints in an otherwise healthy floor.
General household cleaners
Detergents and anything alkaline strip an oiled finish and leave residue on a lacquered one.
Wax and polish on lacquer
It builds up, dulls unevenly, and has to be stripped before the floor can ever be recoated.
The wrong care product for the finish
An oil care product on a lacquered floor leaves a film; a lacquer cleaner on an oiled floor strips it.

Furniture, castors and rugs

Scratches from grit are shallow. These are the ones that reach the wood, and the fixes are cheap, quick and routinely skipped.

Felt under every leg
Every chair, table, sofa and unit, not just the ones that move. Check the pads once a year: a pad with grit embedded in it is worse than no pad at all.
Chair mat under office castors
Or castors made for hard floors. A standard office chair marks a floor quickly.
Lift, never drag
Two people and a minute of care beats a permanent mark.
Move rugs occasionally
Wood mellows in daylight. A rug left in one place for a year leaves a visible outline.

Spills and marks

Speed matters more than technique.

Any liquid
Wipe immediately. Time is what turns a spill into a mark.
Grease
A cleaner made for your finish, not washing up liquid.
Scuff from a shoe
Usually lifts with the correct cleaner and a soft cloth.
Scratch
Repairable in place on an oiled floor. On a lacquered floor it is a recoat by area.

Through the year

Engineered wood is far more stable than solid, but it is still timber and it still responds to the air around it. Fine gaps that open in winter and close again in summer are normal and not a fault. What you are avoiding is not movement but sharp change.

Raise heating gradually
Over several days in autumn rather than in one step, and bring it down the same way in spring.
Ventilate rather than dry hard
A dehumidifier run aggressively creates the swing you are trying to avoid.
Watch conservatories and rooms with a lot of glass
The widest temperature and humidity range in the house. Blinds in the brightest hours help more than they sound like they would.
Keep a low background heat in an empty house
Long unheated periods followed by sudden heating are the same shock as a cold start over underfloor heating.

Which finish do you have

This decides everything about repair, and it is easy to check.

Oiled
Matt and natural to look at, slightly textured to the touch. The oil sits in the wood rather than on it. Repairable in patches.
Lacquered
A film sitting on the surface, from matt to gloss. Harder wearing day to day, but repaired by area rather than by patch.
Quick test
Put one drop of water on the floor in a corner. On an oiled floor it tends to darken the wood slightly. On a lacquered floor it beads on the surface.

Still choosing? Pick a floor that hides wear

If the floor is not down yet, two decisions matter more than the material.

Matt over gloss
A matt finish scatters light and hides fine scratches. Gloss reflects and shows every one.
Texture over smooth
Brushed and textured surfaces disguise marks. A smooth surface displays them.
Character over uniform
A busier grain absorbs marks visually. A very even floor shows each one.
Oiled if you want to repair
Oiled floors are repairable in patches. Lacquered floors are recoated by whole area.

How care relates to the guarantee

Our floors carry a 25 year structural warranty against delamination and structural failure under normal domestic use and correct installation; each product page also states the manufacturer's own warranty for that range. Neither covers surface wear from grit, water damage or fitting errors. Those three are exactly what the routine above prevents, which is the practical reason to bother with it.

Questions about caring for a wood floor

How often should a wood floor be mopped?
Less often than it is swept. Sweep or vacuum whenever there is grit on the floor, which in a family hallway can be daily, and damp mop only when the floor needs it, with a mop wrung until it is barely damp and a cleaner made for the finish.
Can I use a steam mop on engineered wood?
Not unless the manufacturer of your floor specifically allows it. Steam drives moisture into the joints under pressure and is the fastest way to damage a wood floor; the damage is not covered by the structural warranty.
How do I remove a scratch from a wood floor?
On an oiled floor a scratch is repaired in place: clean the area, lightly abrade it if the instructions say so, and re-oil the patch. On a lacquered floor a scratch through the film means recoating the area, because a lacquer cannot be patched invisibly. The finish guides linked above set out each method.
Are gaps between the boards in winter a fault?
Fine gaps that open when the heating is on and close again in summer are the timber responding to drier air, and they are normal. A gap that never closes, cupping or lifting has a cause, usually moisture from below, and is worth investigating.
What does the structural warranty cover?
