European oak from the surface to the subfloor: no core, no wear layer, no bonded construction. It can be sanded and refinished for as long as the tongue holds, and it moves with the seasons.

Windsor planks in 90, 125 and 150 mm widths, random length; Marlow parquet blocks at 90 mm by 300 mm, laid in a pattern. None is listed as compatible with underfloor heating: for a heated room, the engineered range carries the same finishes.

A printed design under a melamine wear surface on a high-density fibreboard core, clicked together over an underlay. It holds up under chair legs, toy cars and dog claws in the dry rooms of the house.

The board is the same across the range: 8 mm thick, 193 mm by 1204 mm, AC4 rated and listed as compatible with underfloor heating. The decision is the printed design, organised by tone. For rooms that get wet, rigid vinyl carries the same tones.

A click floor on a solid polymer core that takes on no water and does not swell, with the underlay attached. It goes into the kitchen, the bathroom and the utility room, where wood and laminate cannot.

Every floor is listed as waterproof and compatible with underfloor heating. Four formats, plank, wide plank, herringbone block and tile, carry a 0.3 mm or 0.55 mm wear layer: the number to write down for a busy room.

The pattern is the first decision, the scale the second: Oxford herringbone blocks at 90 mm by 450 mm and 125 mm by 600 mm, a Knightsbridge chevron board at 90 mm by 510 mm, and an 800 mm square Versailles panel for larger rooms.

Large-format porcelain, frost resistant, specified for floor and wall and listed as compatible with underfloor heating. It takes on almost no water, and it does not etch or scratch the way the stone it follows does.

The format is the same across the range, so the decision is the look and the finish: marble or stone effects, polished, lappato or matt. Polished porcelain is slippery when wet; for a bathroom floor, ask for the slip value on the data sheet.

The one category here that is not a floor: a shower wall in a few large panels instead of tiles. No grout lines to seal, clean and rake out, only the handful of joints where the panels meet.

The Berry Alloc Wall and Water panel: 600 mm wide and 2400 mm tall, a high-pressure laminate face on a plywood core, listed as waterproof, in concrete, cement, marble and matt black surfaces. The sealing at the joints is where a careful fitter earns the warranty.
