The hallway takes more traffic per square metre than any other room, and wet traffic at that, so its floor is chosen for wear and for the mat at the door: rigid vinyl, AC4 laminate or a brushed oak. In Barry 85% of homes are houses, most of them semi-detached houses (31%), so the questions are the subfloor and the underlay rather than impact sound.
Hallway in Barry
The Vale of Glamorgan district counts 57,450 households in the 2021 census, and the mix of houses and flats in that count is what decides how a hallway floor is specified here.
Semi-detached houses are 31% of the Vale of Glamorgan stock, and the semi's hall is a square with the stairs in it and doors to three rooms. One floor across it and into the living room reads as more space; where the living room is oak, the hall is often the same board, and where it is laminate, the hall gets the rigid vinyl so the wet end of the house is the waterproof-listed end.
Terraced houses are 26% of the homes in Vale of Glamorgan, and the terraced hallway in Barry is long, narrow, and the first thing the house shows. A herringbone leads the eye down it; a rigid-vinyl plank with the 0.55 mm wear layer takes the wet boots; a brushed, oiled oak takes both if a mat sits inside the door. The stairs are the other question, and the hallway guide takes them.
Owner-occupation is 72% in Vale of Glamorgan, and an owner in Barry flooring a hall is usually matching it to the living room: the same engineered oak through both, brushed and oiled so the grit does not show and the lane by the door can be re-oiled, or a herringbone that makes the hall the feature.

See it on the mapLocal fact sheet
Vale of Glamorgan in the 2021 census: 57,450 households, 85% houses, 15% flats.
Barry covers CF62 and CF63 — Baruc, Buttrills, Cadoc, Castleland, Court, Dyfan, Gibbonsdown and Illtyd, with Dinas Powys to the east. It sits in the Vale of Glamorgan, a Welsh unitary authority, so planning and building control are one office. The tenure figures are the most stable of any town on this list: ownership 71.9% at the 2021 census against 72.2% in 2011, a change of three tenths of a point in ten years. Private renting rose just one point. Where a market barely moves, people renovate rather than churn, and the sensible spend is on the wear layer rather than the fitting: a 4 mm top layer can be sanded and refinished, a 2 mm one cannot.
Barry is the Vale of Glamorgan's town on the water – CF62 and CF63, with Baruc and Castleland at the core, Cadoxton and Gibbonsdown behind them, and Dinas Powys and Sully out along the coast to the east. Rhoose, St Athan and Llantwit Major sit further west on the same shore.
Baruc takes in Barry Island and Sully sits on the water, so indoor humidity here swings wider than inland. Give the hall a stable core and a proper expansion gap: a vinyl plank takes on no water itself, but the joints between them still do.

In this range the rigid-vinyl planks with the 0.55 mm wear layer, listed as waterproof and rated commercial grade by the manufacturer, and the AC4 laminates for a dry hall. A brushed, oiled oak lasts as long if the grit is kept out by a mat, and it can be re-oiled where it wears.
It is the room herringbone suits best: the diagonal leads the eye along the hall and it reads wider. The small 90 x 450 mm block keeps the pattern in proportion; the rigid-vinyl herringbone does the same and takes wet boots.
A floating floor stops at the bottom step. Stairs are fitted separately, with nosings and a fixed board or a stair-specific covering, and the hallways-and-stairs guide linked below explains the options.
You can order samples to any CF62 or CF63 address, and keep the piece once the first room is laid. When the next room comes round, holding that sample against the new board is the quickest check that the batch has not drifted.
Yes. We deliver across Barry and South Wales from our UK warehouse, including the CF62 and CF63 postcode districts. Delivery cost and timing depend on the delivery postcode and are shown at checkout, and samples come by post first so the floor can be seen in the room before the full order.
Yes: cut samples are £1.99 each, up to two per product, posted to your Barry address. Two or three side by side on the floor, in the room's own light morning and evening, settle the colour faster than any photograph.
