Terraces dominate Bristol: 46% of homes are mid-terrace and 10% end-terrace, and about a third of the stock predates 1930, with 17% built before 1900. The Victorian terraces of Bedminster, Easton and Montpelier are suspended timber at ground level, frequently over a cellar, and frequently not level — Bristol's hills show up inside the houses as much as outside. In the 33 conservation areas, Clifton and Hotwells and Kingsdown among them, original boards are a protected feature. Lockleaze and Knowle West bring the opposite condition: new screed with underfloor heating, where engineered wood is the right construction and solid timber is not.
A third of Bristol is terraced and one home in ten is a flat within a larger house, much of it Georgian and Victorian through Clifton, Redland, Montpelier and Bedminster. In the older terraces the front room's floor does not sit on the ground at all: it spans a vault under the pavement.
Those pavement vaults were built for coal and have little ventilation left. The timber floor above one is therefore drier or damper than the rest of the house depending on what has happened to the hatch and the airbricks — which is why a reading taken in the back room says nothing about the front.

In this range the rigid-vinyl planks with the 0.55 mm wear layer, listed as waterproof and rated commercial grade by the manufacturer, and the AC4 laminates for a dry hall. A brushed, oiled oak lasts as long if the grit is kept out by a mat, and it can be re-oiled where it wears.
It is the room herringbone suits best: the diagonal leads the eye along the hall and it reads wider. The small 90 x 450 mm block keeps the pattern in proportion; the rigid-vinyl herringbone does the same and takes wet boots.
A floating floor stops at the bottom step. Stairs are fitted separately, with nosings and a fixed board or a stair-specific covering, and the hallways-and-stairs guide linked below explains the options.
On the harbourside the balcony door is the weak point rather than the water outside. Wind drives rain against the threshold on an exposed elevation, so specify the metre inside that door for standing water and check the drainage channel before blaming the floor for it.
