Herringbone is the traditional zig-zag and forgives a squarer room; chevron is the continuous arrow and wants a room with length. Chevron blocks are mitred, so the setting-out is less forgiving and the border matters more. The comparison guide takes it further.

The oak chevron is for dry rooms. For a patterned floor in a kitchen the rigid-vinyl herringbone, listed as waterproof, is the range to look at; there is no vinyl chevron in the range.
Value in these houses turns on the kitchen decision more than on the grade of board. Where the kitchen is staying, laying to the plinth saves real money; where it will be replaced within a few years, running the floor underneath is what you will be glad of.
