The WF1 to WF4 area takes in Normanton, Featherstone, Hemsworth, Horbury and South Ossett, Crofton, Ryhill and Walton, and Ackworth, North Elmsall and Upton. Social renting stands at 21.7%, much of it inter-war and post-war semis that pair a solid slab downstairs with joisted floors above. That makes two different jobs in one house: a ground floor that may predate any damp-proof membrane and should be tested before vinyl or a resin-backed product goes on, and upstairs boards that want squeaks fixed and a smoothing layer under carpet or laminate. Doors usually need easing wherever a thicker build-up is introduced.
Nine households in twenty across Wakefield district live in a semi-detached house, out to Normanton, Featherstone, Hemsworth, Crofton and Horbury. Herringbone is the traditional zig-zag and forgives a squarer room; chevron is the continuous arrow and wants a room with length. Chevron blocks are mitred, so the setting-out is less forgiving and the border matters more. The comparison guide takes it further.

The oak chevron is for dry rooms. For a patterned floor in a kitchen the rigid-vinyl herringbone, listed as waterproof, is the range to look at; there is no vinyl chevron in the range.
Decide the edge detail at the quoting stage rather than on fitting day. It changes the price, the time on site and the look of every room, and in this housing — square rooms, plain skirtings — taking the skirting off is straightforward and worth the cleaner line.
