The Oxford Herringbone blocks come in two sizes, 90 x 450 mm and 125 x 600 mm, in natural, light, dark brown, fumed and whitewashed oak; Oxford Herringbone Light Oak is the one most often chosen for a hallway. The Knightsbridge Chevron Natural Brushed Oak cuts the block at an angle for the arrow pattern, and the Montpellier Oak Versailles Panel is the 800 x 800 mm panel for a dining room. All are engineered, tongue and groove, and listed for underfloor heating.

LN1 and LN2 reach Carholme, Castle, Minster, Abbey, Boultham and Glebe, then continue out to Nettleham, Saxilby, Sudbrooke, Cherry Willingham, Scampton, Stow, Collingham and Dunholme and Welton. Semi-detached housing is the largest single type at 30.7%, with terraces just behind on 29.6%. A rented market of that size turns floors over quickly, so how easily a covering can be lifted and replaced counts for as much as its wear rating; click-fit systems over a decent underlay suit it. Older terraces in the inner wards commonly have suspended timber below; airbricks should be left clear and the boards checked for damp before anything is fixed down.

The city divides on a hill, and on a sloping site the ground floor is often not one floor. A house built into the slope may step down between rooms, and an internal step needs its own nosing — the part most often left to the fitting day.

Herringbone in the 90 x 450 mm block suits the hallways and front rooms of terraces and semis; the larger 125 x 600 mm block and the chevron suit longer rooms; a Versailles panel wants a square room with the space to show it. The engineered blocks in this range are glued down. A pattern floor holds its geometry through the adhesive; floated, the blocks drift. The rigid-vinyl herringbone is the click-together alternative where a glued floor is not wanted.
Manufacturers' guidance puts the waste allowance for herringbone or chevron at 15 to 20 percent, against 8 to 12 for a straight plank, because every cut at the perimeter produces an unusable offcut. The calculator on the site works with the real pack sizes.
A student house sees furniture moved in and out every summer, which is harder on a floor than daily use. Specify a hard surface layer rather than a deep sandable one, fit felt pads at the start of each tenancy, and keep spare planks for the hall.
