Herringbone is the traditional zig-zag and forgives a squarer room; chevron is the continuous arrow and wants a room with length. Chevron blocks are mitred, so the setting-out is less forgiving and the border matters more. The comparison guide takes it further.

The oak chevron is for dry rooms. For a patterned floor in a kitchen the rigid-vinyl herringbone, listed as waterproof, is the range to look at; there is no vinyl chevron in the range.
It repays itself in a large, regular room where the pattern has wall to develop. In a small room with a bay it is mostly cuts, and the labour weighs heavier in the total than it does with straight planks. The subfloor has to be flat before any of it is worth doing.
