Herringbone is the traditional zig-zag and forgives a squarer room; chevron is the continuous arrow and wants a room with length. Chevron blocks are mitred, so the setting-out is less forgiving and the border matters more. The comparison guide takes it further.

The oak chevron is for dry rooms. For a patterned floor in a kitchen the rigid-vinyl herringbone, listed as waterproof, is the range to look at; there is no vinyl chevron in the range.
Near the front, sand is the abrasive, and a textured matt finish holds up against it far better than gloss. In a single-storey home that specification then applies everywhere at once, because the same floor runs through every room — so ask for the maximum run length before ordering.
