In this range the rigid-vinyl planks with the 0.55 mm wear layer, listed as waterproof and rated commercial grade by the manufacturer, and the AC4 laminates for a dry hall. A brushed, oiled oak lasts as long if the grit is kept out by a mat, and it can be re-oiled where it wears.
It is the room herringbone suits best: the diagonal leads the eye along the hall and it reads wider. The small 90 x 450 mm block keeps the pattern in proportion; the rigid-vinyl herringbone does the same and takes wet boots.

On the newer estates the ground floor runs hall to kitchen without a structural break, so the material matters less than whether it has been given room to expand at every edge, door linings included. Laminate, LVT and engineered board all suit; a closed gap defeats all three.
