Hallway Flooring in Redditch

The hallway takes more traffic per square metre than any other room, and wet traffic at that, so its floor is chosen for wear and for the mat at the door: rigid vinyl, AC4 laminate or a brushed oak. In Redditch 85% of homes are houses, most of them semi-detached houses (31%), so the questions are the subfloor and the underlay rather than impact sound.

Hallway in Redditch

Hallway flooring in Redditch: what the housing says

The Redditch district counts 36,378 households in the 2021 census, and the mix of houses and flats in that count is what decides how a hallway floor is specified here.

Semi-detached houses are 31% of the Redditch stock, and the semi's hall is a square with the stairs in it and doors to three rooms. One floor across it and into the living room reads as more space; where the living room is oak, the hall is often the same board, and where it is laminate, the hall gets the rigid vinyl so the wet end of the house is the waterproof-listed end.

Social renting is 20% of households in Redditch, and the hall in that stock is rigid vinyl across a programme: it takes the traffic, it is listed as waterproof, and it is wiped clean between inspections. A tenant fitting a hall floor in that stock needs the landlord's written consent first, and a floating floor that lifts again is the easier request.

Local fact sheet

Redditch's homes, by the numbers

Redditch in the 2021 census: 36,378 households, 85% houses, 15% flats.

Redditch is B97 and B98 — Central, Batchley and Brockhill, Greenlands and Lakeside, Headless Cross and Oakenshaw, Matchborough and Woodrow, and out to Astwood Bank and Feckenham. It is a district of Worcestershire, and worth distinguishing from Birmingham: the B postcode is shared, the council is not. Social renting is high at 20.2% while private renting is comparatively low at 14.4%. Redditch was designated a new town in 1964 and most of the housing dates from then, which means a concrete ground floor almost everywhere. The check is the damp-proof membrane, not the level of the boards, and a floating floor over a decent underlay is usually the right answer.

An address in B97 or B98 is taken for a Birmingham one often enough, and it is not one. Redditch is a Worcestershire borough with its own council, planned and built to its own brief, so nothing about the housing here follows from the city that happens to share the postcode letter.

The slab under an Oakenshaw or Callow Hill ground floor takes its temperature from the earth beneath, not from the room above, so it reads cool underfoot however warm the house is. Insulating value under the covering counts for more here than the board over it.

Guides

Before you choose

Before you order in Redditch

  • A mat inside the door Grit scratches; a mat catches it. It is the smallest item in the specification and the one that decides how the floor looks in five years.
  • Wear layer or wear class 0.55 mm on the rigid vinyl, AC4 on the laminate, a brushed face on the oak. The hall is a class 23 room in EN ISO 10874's terms, heavy domestic.
  • The stairs are a separate decision A floating floor does not go up stairs. The hallway guide sets out the options.
  • The hall, the stairs, the kitchen door A semi's hall runs from the front door past the stairs to the kitchen: three thresholds, one floor. The stairs are a separate decision; the kitchen door is where the base changes.
  • Consent, then the slip test A tenancy agreement usually needs the landlord's consent for a hard floor; a provider asks for the pendulum slip figure at the wet end of the hall.

Questions

Hallway flooring in Redditch: questions, answered

What is the hardest-wearing hallway floor?

In this range the rigid-vinyl planks with the 0.55 mm wear layer, listed as waterproof and rated commercial grade by the manufacturer, and the AC4 laminates for a dry hall. A brushed, oiled oak lasts as long if the grit is kept out by a mat, and it can be re-oiled where it wears.

Can I lay herringbone in a narrow Redditch hallway?

It is the room herringbone suits best: the diagonal leads the eye along the hall and it reads wider. The small 90 x 450 mm block keeps the pattern in proportion; the rigid-vinyl herringbone does the same and takes wet boots.

What about the stairs?

A floating floor stops at the bottom step. Stairs are fitted separately, with nosings and a fixed board or a stair-specific covering, and the hallways-and-stairs guide linked below explains the options.

Can I order flooring samples to my Redditch address?

We post samples to any B97 or B98 address. The town went up in a single stretch, so a sample here is a question of colour and grain rather than construction; lay two or three in the room they are meant for and look again after dark.

Do you deliver hallway flooring to Redditch?

Yes. We deliver across Redditch and Worcestershire from our UK warehouse, including the B97 and B98 postcode districts. Delivery cost and timing depend on the delivery postcode and are shown at checkout, and samples come by post first so the floor can be seen in the room before the full order.

Can I see a hallway sample before ordering in Redditch?

Yes: cut samples are £1.99 each, up to two per product, posted to your Redditch address. Two or three side by side on the floor, in the room's own light morning and evening, settle the colour faster than any photograph.
