Portsmouth in the 2021 census: 86,155 households, 64% houses, 36% flats.

Terraced houses account for 43.4% of Portsmouth's dwellings and purpose-built flats add another 26.5%, a balance that shapes almost every job in PO1 to PO5. Fratton, Copnor, Baffins, Milton, Central Southsea, Eastney and Craneswater, Nelson, Hilsea, Charles Dickens, St Thomas and St Jude all sit inside that area. Terraces of this kind usually rest on timber joists at ground level, with narrow halls that reward one continuous run instead of a threshold strip at every doorway. Where a flat has been formed inside a converted house, 6.3% of the total, the floor sits directly over someone else's ceiling, so impact sound is the first specification decision rather than an afterthought. Private renting, at 28.6%, keeps that turnover steady.
