There is no single one; there is a right floor per room. Rigid vinyl with the 0.55 mm wear layer in the kitchen, the utility and the hall; an AC4 laminate or a brushed, oiled oak in the living room and bedrooms. The dog guide linked below goes room by room.
A gloss lacquer, yes, and visibly. A brushed surface with an oiled finish hides the marks in its texture and can be re-oiled in the lane where the dog walks. Clipped claws and a mat at the door matter more than the board.
Left to stand, liquid gets into a laminate joint and the core swells. Wiped up, it does no harm. For the rooms where an accident is likely the floor listed as waterproof is the safer choice.
It suits a Chester townhouse, with two provisos. The labour is a larger share of the cost than in a plank floor, and the block size has to answer the room — small blocks in a small room read busy. With a dog in the house, choose the harder surface layer.
