Herringbone flooring in Liverpool: what the housing says

The pattern runs best along the length of a room, so decide the direction from the doorway rather than from the longest wall in the plan.

A Liverpool terrace hall is narrow and runs straight to the stairs, and herringbone laid along it from the front door gives the corridor a direction it otherwise lacks. The finer Oxford block suits that width; the broader block belongs in the front room of a Lark Lane or Aigburth villa. Both are set out from the centre line so the cuts land evenly against the skirtings.

Over the levelled boards of a pre-war terrace the blocks are glued to a plywood deck; over the heated screed at Liverpool Waters the engineered block is the only construction to use. A brushed, oiled block hides the grit an L8 pavement brings in through the winter better than a smooth lacquer, and the blocks acclimatise in the room before they meet the adhesive.

With terraced houses at 38% of the Liverpool stock, the Liverpool hallway is a narrow one, and that is the room herringbone was made for: the diagonal pattern draws the eye along the length and the hall reads wider than it is. The smaller 90 x 450 mm block keeps the pattern in proportion. Liverpool's homes, by the numbers

Liverpool in the 2021 census: 207,491 households, 77% houses, 23% flats.

Around 35% of Liverpool's homes predate 1914 and roughly 60% predate 1944; 41% are terraces and only 7% are detached. That is one of the oldest housing profiles of any major English city, and it means the default assumption should be suspended timber at ground level with a boarded floor already under the carpet. Lift a corner before you order. If the boards are sound, an engineered floor can often go straight over a levelling layer; if they are not, budget for the base as well as the floor. In the 36 conservation areas — Sefton Park, Rodney Street, Lark Lane, Wavertree Village — that original board is a heritage feature and removing it is not automatically yours to decide.

Liverpool is two fifths terraced, more than any other city on this list, and a quarter rent from a social landlord. Much of it is pre-war, with a suspended timber ground floor over a void that was built to breathe.

Later extensions and paved yards have closed a great many of those airbricks. The void then stops drying, the joist ends sitting in the wall are the first to suffer, and the tenant reports a floor that feels springy long before anything looks wrong from above.
