Houses account for 90.9% of dwellings in Wigan, semi-detached alone for 45.6%, and flats for just 9.1%. WN1, WN2 and WN3 serve Wigan Central, Wigan West, Winstanley, Hindley, Hindley Green, Ince, Abram and Standish with Langtree. Where nearly every address is a house, impact sound between separate dwellings rarely arises and attention shifts downwards: slabs of varying age, screeds that may or may not have dried out, and older suspended timber that needs its airflow kept clear. Porcelain is permanent, cool and hard, and suits a wet room with a fall; rigid vinyl listed as waterproof is warmer, quieter, floats over a timber first floor and can be lifted. Both need the edges sealed properly, which is where a bathroom floor fails if it fails.

The tiles and the rigid vinyl are listed for it. The screed is dry on a reading and the system commissioned before the floor goes down; the surface limit in a bathroom under EN 1264 is 33 °C.
In a wet climate the deciding property is what happens when water sits on a joint rather than being wiped up. LVT and SPC take that without swelling; a laminate core does not, and in a hall that meets boots and wet coats daily, that is what separates them.
