More than a quarter of Nottingham's houses are over a hundred years old and more than half are over fifty, with roughly a quarter built before 1930. Over a rock-cut cellar the ground floor is suspended timber across an unusually deep void. That is not a problem in itself, but it makes two things decisive: whether the joist ends bearing into the walls are sound, and whether the void still has air moving through it.
