More than a fifth of households rent privately, 22.0% in 2021 against 19.5% ten years earlier, and that is the sharpest shift in the local tenure profile; owner occupation has eased to 64.8%. Rented addresses in Barton, Northgate, St Stephen's, Westgate and Wincheap change what a floor has to survive: heavier traffic, furniture moved in and out between tenancies, and a preference for a covering that can be lifted and patched in sections instead of relaid whole.
