Kirklees is the district the census figures describe, and terraced homes there run to 31.5% of the total against 12.6% for flats of every kind — an unusually house-heavy profile at 87.3%. In a Victorian stone house, carrying the floor up the stairs looks continuous but is harder to get right: each tread needs a nosing, the treads must not become slippery, and the flight gets louder. Stopping at the bottom step is quieter and safer, but that junction then needs designing.
