The inter-war slab that makes up so much of Coventry is the easiest base a block floor can have: ground flat, the membrane checked, and a Marlow block in basketweave or brick bond glued straight to it in the bay-fronted lounge of a Cheylesmore or Styvechale semi. In Earlsdon the older houses are on timber, and the block goes on a plywood deck over levelled joists; an original parquet there is restored before it is replaced.

At Friargate and Spon End the screed is heated and the block is the engineered Oxford construction, because a solid block gaps over heat. A Versailles panel wants a Styvechale or Finham house broad enough to show several whole panels rather than a terrace front room. A patterned floor wastes more in the cutting than a plank floor, and the order allows for it.

Terraced houses are 40% of the Coventry stock, and a terraced hallway is where a herringbone floor earns its reputation: the pattern leads the eye down a narrow space and makes it read longer. The base is the work. Coventry's housing tells the city's twentieth century in two halves. The inter-war suburban expansion of the 1920s and 30s left large areas of semis on solid concrete slabs, where the damp-proof membrane is the thing to check before anything is laid. Coventry’s housing stock reflects its post-war rebuilding and recent regeneration, with a strong mix of 1930s semis, modern new-builds and traditional homes in surrounding areas like Kenilworth. The city’s 2021 City of Culture status has boosted investment in both commercial and residential interiors.

A bay is often carried on its own shallow footing or a sleeper wall, separate from the main floor behind it. The two can settle at slightly different rates, so the floor inside a bay may sit a fraction low — worth checking with a straightedge before a rigid board is laid across the join.
