Southampton has an above-average share of terraces and of homes built before 1919, alongside a city centre substantially rebuilt after the war. The pre-1919 terraces are suspended timber at ground level and want levelling; the post-war centre is solid floor, where the damp-proof membrane matters. The city's 20 conservation areas include Carlton Crescent and Oxford Street, where original boards are part of the protected character. Bargate Quarter and Houndwell Place are new build — screed, commonly underfloor heating, and engineered wood rather than solid.
