Herringbone is the traditional zig-zag and forgives a squarer room; chevron is the continuous arrow and wants a room with length. Chevron blocks are mitred, so the setting-out is less forgiving and the border matters more. The comparison guide takes it further.

The oak chevron is for dry rooms. For a patterned floor in a kitchen the rigid-vinyl herringbone, listed as waterproof, is the range to look at; there is no vinyl chevron in the range.
In a house, the subfloor and the expected life decide it, and that is a wear layer question. In a town-centre flat the lease comes first: most set a minimum for impact sound, and the build-up has to reach it before anything else is chosen.
