Oxford's 18 conservation areas cover an unusually large share of the city — the Central (University and City) area, the North Oxford Victorian Suburb, Jericho and Osney Town among them — and inside them the original floor is part of what the designation protects. Before planning to lift historic boards in Jericho or North Oxford, check whether the property is listed or in a conservation area, because that determines what you are allowed to do rather than what you would prefer. Elsewhere the practical split is the usual one: suspended timber in the older terraces, which wants levelling, and solid slab in the later estates, which wants the damp-proof membrane checked.
