Kitchen flooring in Cambridge: what the housing says

Vinyl handles the level change with a simple trim and takes the wear of a household that arrives with bicycles, boots and no attachment to the kitchen.

The kitchen at Eddington or Darwin Green is the modern Cambridge kitchen: open-plan on a heated screed, with a floor that runs into the living space and has to look like one surface across the whole ground floor. Large-format porcelain from the tile range does that with few grout lines and carries the heat into the room quickly; the BML rigid vinyl plank does it in a warmer surface and continues into the utility room. Both are listed as compatible with the heating.

In a Mill Road or Romsey terrace the kitchen is in the rear extension a step below the hall, and the step is the detail: a nosing that sheds water back onto the tread, and a floor below it that is mopped. Bicycles come through most Cambridge kitchens on the way to the garden, and a plank that takes a wet tyre without marking is a real argument in this city.

Flats are 35% of the homes in the Cambridge district, and a kitchen in a flat is often open to the living room and above or below a neighbour. A rigid-vinyl floor over an acoustic underlay carries less footfall through the slab than a tile does, and it stays under the door thresholds; the lease usually has a view on hard floors, and it is read first.

Terraced houses are 28% of the homes in Cambridge, and the terraced kitchen in Cambridge is the room at the back, often on a concrete floor laid over the old scullery, sometimes damp. That base is the decision: a rigid-vinyl floor bridges a slab that is not quite flat and floats over it, where a tile needs the slab levelled and a dry reading first. Cambridge in the 2021 census: 52,472 households, 65% houses, 35% flats.

30.6% of Cambridge's private housing stock predates 1919, against 23.5% for England as a whole, and terraces (42.1%) and semis (32.5%) make up three quarters of it. The Mill Road and De Freville terraces are suspended timber at ground level, often narrow, often with a level change to a rear extension — measure each part separately. Cambridge's 18 conservation areas include the Historic Core, Mill Road, De Freville and Newnham Croft, where original boards are protected and cannot simply be lifted. Darwin Green and Eddington are the opposite condition entirely: new screed with underfloor heating, where engineered wood is the correct construction and solid timber is not.

Close to a third of Cambridge lives in a purpose-built flat and another third rents privately, both well above the county pattern. Newer housing has gone up steadily on the northern and eastern edges, and it is built to a standard the older terraces of Romsey and Petersfield were not.

A new, well-sealed house heated through the winter runs drier indoors than an older one, and wood responds to that. Boards fitted straight from a cold van into a warm, dry room shrink; left to settle in the room first, at the temperature it will actually be held at, they do not.

  • Dry slab, tested A kitchen floor in an older house has often been wet. A hygrometer reading, dry to BS 8203 practice, before the floor.
  • Vinyl or tile: warmth against permanence Rigid vinyl floats, is warmer and quieter and can be lifted; porcelain is bedded, harder and stays.
  • Units first or floor first A floating floor runs under the kick boards, not under the units; a tile usually runs under everything. Decide with the kitchen fitter.
  • Sound through the slab In a flat, the vinyl over an acoustic underlay carries less footfall than a tile. The lease may decide.
  • The terrace kitchen slab The kitchen at the back of a terrace is on the oldest slab in the house, often with no membrane. The hygrometer reading first; a floating floor listed as waterproof over it, sealed at the edges.

Which kitchen floor suits a Cambridge home?

There are two candidates in the range and the room decides: rigid vinyl listed as waterproof, warmer and quieter and forgiving of an old base, or porcelain tile, harder and permanent. The kitchen guide linked below compares them.

Can I have wood flooring in a kitchen?

Engineered oak is fitted in kitchens with a sealed finish and wiped-up spills, but it is not listed as waterproof and a leak under a dishwasher will mark it. Where the look of wood is wanted with the listing, the rigid-vinyl planks and herringbone are the answer.

Does a kitchen floor need a slip rating?

The HSE grades slip potential by pendulum test value, with 36 or above rated low. Two of the porcelain tiles in the range carry an R11 rating in the listing; for a domestic kitchen the floor is chosen for the spill and the mop as much as for the rating.

How do I choose the right flooring for my Cambridge home?
