Meet Maliqui, the racehorse we sponsor

Homes & Floors is proud to sponsor Maliqui, a two-year-old trained by Charlie Fellowes in Newmarket. Here is who he is, how his training is going and what comes next.

Who is Maliqui?

Maliqui is an Irish-bred two-year-old, owned by Laurence Bellman and partners and trained by Charlie Fellowes in Newmarket, the home of British flat racing. Every morning strings of racehorses cross the heath on their way to the gallops, and Maliqui is one of them.

Newmarket is a short drive from our office at Endeavour House in Stansted. Racing is part of life in this corner of East Anglia, and we are proud to be behind a young horse from our part of the world. It follows our first race day with the Fellowes yard, when the Homes & Floors name was carried on the silks.

This week’s update from the yard

This week Maliqui went over to the Al Bahathri, a mile-long all-weather gallop on Newmarket’s Bury side, and did a nice piece of work alongside an unraced filly by Starspangledbanner. Every time he goes out to work, he seems to take another step forward, and the update from Charlie Fellowes Racing afterwards was a happy one.

He worked really nicely this morning. He looks well, he’s moving well, he’s fit and in a good place. So I’m really, really happy with how he’s going.

Why cheekpieces are next

In his races, Maliqui sometimes stargazes: racing slang for a horse that lifts his head and looks around instead of concentrating on the job. To help him focus, his team will now work him at home in cheekpieces.

I feel like in his races he often stargazes a little bit, and I think he’d be much better with something on his head, just to make him focus slightly better.

CheekpiecesStrips of sheepskin along the sides of the bridle. They partly block the view behind, so there is less to distract him.

What comes next

His team is clearly pleased with him. In the words of the yard, Maliqui is “a horse that’s ready to go and win”, and has just been a little unlucky not to have done it yet. We will share his next run and the next update from Newmarket as soon as we have them, here and on our social channels.
