What width actually changes

A wider board means fewer joints across the same area. Fewer joints means a quieter, less busy floor, and it lets the grain of each board read as a feature rather than as texture.

The effect on a room is real. Wide boards make a space feel calmer and often larger, because the eye has fewer lines to travel across.

Good to know: Width is one of the hardest things to judge from a photograph, because there is nothing in the image to give it scale. A sample against your own skirting board settles it immediately.

What it asks in return

Wide boards are less forgiving in three specific ways.

Subfloor flatness

A wide board spans more, so it sits across a dip rather than following it. Any unevenness shows as a rock or a hollow sound.

Movement

Wood moves across its width, so a wider board moves more in absolute terms through the seasons.

Construction

This is why wide boards are normally engineered. The cross layered core is what keeps a wide board stable.

Important: A wide solid wood board in a room with a wide humidity swing is the combination most likely to cup or gap. Engineered construction is the answer.

Where it works best

Width and room size need to agree.

Large open rooms

Wide boards need floor area to read properly. This is where they look best.

Rooms with good natural light

Light across a wide board shows the grain. It is much of the appeal.

Small rooms

A very wide board in a small room can look out of proportion, and most of it ends up cut away at the edges.

Corridors

A wide board across a narrow hallway emphasises the narrowness. Lay along the length instead.
