What is the difference between engineered wood and solid wood flooring?

Engineered wood has a real oak top layer bonded to a stable plywood base, giving it excellent dimensional stability for underfloor heating and rooms with fluctuating moisture. Solid wood is milled from a single piece of timber with a thicker wear layer that can be sanded and refinished multiple times. Both deliver a premium natural look.

Is LVT vinyl flooring waterproof?

The planks are — vinyl takes on no water, so it will not swell or lift at the joints the way timber and laminate can. That makes it a natural fit for kitchens, bathrooms and busy family homes. It replicates the look of natural wood or stone while providing hard-wearing durability, comfort underfoot and easy day-to-day maintenance.

How an oiled finish works

Oil soaks into the timber and hardens inside it rather than forming a film on top. You are touching wood, not a coating, which is why an oiled floor feels warm and slightly textured and why the grain reads so clearly.

The practical consequence is the important one. Because there is no film to break, an oiled floor can be repaired in the exact spot that needs it. Clean the area, apply oil, blend the edges, and the repair disappears. A lacquered floor cannot be treated this way.

Good to know: An oiled floor improves with maintenance rather than merely surviving it. Each refresh puts oil back into the wood.

Everyday cleaning

Less water and more sweeping than most people expect.

Sweep or vacuum first

Always remove grit before any mop touches the floor.

Use an oil soap

A cleaner made for oiled floors. It cleans without stripping the oil out of the wood.

Barely damp mop

Wring it out until it feels almost dry. Oiled wood is more open than lacquer, so water reaches the timber more easily.

No general cleaners

Household detergents and anything alkaline will lift the oil and leave dull patches.

Important: Never steam clean an oiled floor. Steam drives moisture into open timber and lifts the finish.

Refreshing the oil

This is the part that keeps an oiled floor looking new, and it is well within reach of a careful owner.

Watch the busy areas

Doorways, the front of the sofa and the route through the kitchen dry out first. When they start to look pale or thirsty, it is time.

Clean thoroughly and let it dry

Oil applied over a dirty floor seals the dirt in.

Test in a hidden corner

Under a rug or inside a cupboard. Check the colour and sheen before you commit to the room.

Apply thinly and evenly

Thin coats absorb properly. A thick coat stays tacky and attracts dirt.

Keep off it while it cures

Follow the product timing. Walking on curing oil leaves marks that need doing again.

Pro tip: Refresh the high traffic route on its own rather than the whole room. Blending into an oiled floor is straightforward, which is the advantage of this finish.

Dealing with marks

Most marks on an oiled floor can be dealt with locally.

Light scratch

Clean the area and apply a little oil. It usually disappears as the wood takes it up.

Dull patch

Normally oil that has worn away. Clean, dry, re oil.

Water mark

Dry it fully first. Once dry, clean and re oil the area.

Dent

A compression in the timber rather than a finish problem. Re oiling will not lift it.

Questions about oiled floors

How often does an oiled floor need re-oiling?

It depends on traffic rather than on the calendar: a hallway may want a maintenance oil every year or two, a bedroom far less often. The sign is a surface that looks dry and dull after cleaning and no longer beads water; a light maintenance coat then brings it back without sanding.

Can I use an ordinary floor cleaner on an oiled floor?

No. Detergents and anything alkaline strip the oil out of the surface and leave the timber unprotected. Use the cleaner made for oiled floors, at the stated dilution, with a mop wrung until it is barely damp.

How do I repair a scratch on an oiled floor?

Locally, which is the point of an oiled finish: clean the area, abrade the mark lightly if the product instructions say so, and re-oil the patch, feathering it into the surrounding floor. A lacquered floor cannot be patched this way.

Will an oiled floor cope with a family kitchen?

It copes with traffic well and can be repaired where it wears, but it needs spills wiped promptly because the oil sits in the wood rather than sealing it. For the wet end of a kitchen the rigid vinyl listed as waterproof is the easier floor; oiled oak suits the living side of an open plan room.
