Dark and smoked oak herringbone in a room

Dark and smoked oak gives a herringbone weight: the blocks stand out against pale walls, and the floor anchors a large room or a scheme with a lot of white. In a small room with little daylight a dark floor closes the space in, so look at a sample on the floor at the darkest time of the day before you decide. In the engineered blocks, smoked means oak darkened right through by a reaction with ammonia rather than by a surface stain; in rigid vinyl and laminate the tone is part of the printed decor.

Questions about dark and smoked oak herringbone

Which dark and smoked oak herringbone is listed as waterproof?
BML Herringbone Antique Smoked Oak SPC Floor and BML Herringbone Vintage Fumed Oak SPC Luxury Vinyl Flooring: the rigid vinyl, listed as waterproof by the maker and fitted with the edges sealed to the instructions. The wood and the laminate are for the dry rooms.
Can dark and smoked oak herringbone go over underfloor heating?
Yes: all 8 are listed as compatible. Wood blocks are glued to a commissioned, dry screed; rigid vinyl and laminate float on an underlay rated for heating, with floor plus underlay kept within the 0.15 m²K/W the systems are designed for.
How much extra should I order?
Plan 15% to 20% over the measured room area, the allowance manufacturers give for patterned floors, and order it in one batch, because a later top up may not match the tone.
Will the colour match the photos?
Not exactly, and no photo can promise that: the screen, the daylight and the light bulbs all move an oak tone. The colour names here are the ones each product listing gives. A cut sample is £1.99, up to two per product; look at it on the floor in the morning and in the evening before you order.
Where are the other herringbone colours?
On the herringbone page, in sections by colour: light oak (6), grey oak (6), white and whitewashed oak (3) and natural, golden and walnut (12). All 35 herringbone floors are there, with the materials and block sizes compared.
