The long hall of a Glasgow tenement is the classic herringbone opportunity: a corridor that otherwise does nothing, given a direction and a rhythm from the front door through to the back room. It is the smallest architectural change a flat of that age can make.

It sits above the acoustic layer the title deeds require, so decide the block thickness after the mat and levelling compound, not before.
The Oxford herringbone block goes down in a Glasgow close over the same build-up as any other floor there: acoustic mat, levelling compound, plywood deck, then the blocks glued and set out from the centre line of the hall so the cuts land evenly at both skirtings. In a G20 or G31 hall the finer block suits the width; the broader block belongs in the front room of a Park Circus or Pollokshields flat.
Over the heated screed of the Sighthill and Wyndford homes the engineered block is the construction to use, because a solid block gaps over a heat source. The order carries the higher cutting waste of a diagonal pattern, and the blocks sit in the flat for a few days before laying; a close on the west side of the city is a damp place in February, and the blocks should meet the room before they meet the glue.

You are laying over timber joists with a neighbour underneath, so impact sound insulation is a requirement of the title deeds in most tenements, not a refinement. The original boarding under the carpet is usually sound but rarely level, so budget for levelling. In the Glasgow West, Dennistoun, Park and Strathbungo conservation areas, and in any listed tenement, that boarding is protected. Sighthill, Dundashill, Hamiltonhill and Wyndford are new build — screed, underfloor heating, engineered wood.
Glasgow's tenements are built around the common close: a shared stone stair with flats off it on every landing. That single detail governs more about a flooring order here than the choice of board — how it arrives, how far it has to be carried, and how much height there is once it is in.
A close stair turns tightly and the flat doors are original, so board length and total build-up are both constrained before a range is chosen. Ask for the pack length and the finished height at the quotation stage; a shorter format often solves on paper what would otherwise be solved by cutting on the landing.

The hallway and the living room above all: the pattern reads best along a length. In a kitchen the rigid-vinyl herringbone is the version to use, because it is listed as waterproof and the oak blocks are not.
A glued pattern floor takes longer to lay than a floating plank and uses more material, 15 to 20 percent waste against 8 to 12. The cost guide linked below cites the published fitting figures rather than guessing them.
The engineered Oxford blocks and the rigid-vinyl herringbone are both listed for underfloor heating. The screed has to be dry and the system commissioned before either goes down.
