A Glasgow tenement already has a solid timber floor under the carpet, and in Glasgow West, Park or Strathbungo it may be protected. The honest advice is often to restore what is there rather than to lay a new board over it.
Solid Wood in Glasgow
Where a new solid floor does go down, the impact-sound requirement in the title deeds still applies, and it has to be planned into the depth from the start.
The tenement already has a solid timber floor, and in Glasgow West, Dennistoun, Park and Strathbungo that floor is protected; the right solid-wood order in those closes is often sanding and refinishing what is there. Where a new solid board is right, it is in the villas of Pollokshields and Newlands, on suspended timber over a ventilated void, with a Windsor board laid tongue and groove after the boards have acclimatised in the room.
Two cases rule it out. In an upper tenement flat the deeds require impact sound insulation beneath the floor, and a solid board over a resilient layer needs a plywood deck between them that the total depth rarely allows at the door. In the new Sighthill and Wyndford homes the screed carries heating, and a solid board over a heat source is the wrong construction; the engineered range is listed as compatible with the heating instead.

Glasgow’s housing stock is among the most architecturally impressive in the UK, from grand Victorian and Art Nouveau tenements in the West End and Shawlands to modern developments along the Clyde and substantial family homes in Newton Mearns and Bearsden. The city’s famous sandstone tenement flats have generous room proportions that suit wide-plank flooring beautifully.
A close stair turns tightly and the flat doors are original, so board length and total build-up are both constrained before a range is chosen. Ask for the pack length and the finished height at the quotation stage; a shorter format often solves on paper what would otherwise be solved by cutting on the landing.

For a room with a timber floor structure and a steady climate, yes: it is fixed to the joists as the original floor was, and it can be sanded and refinished for decades. For a concrete ground floor, a flat with a sound clause or a heated screed, the engineered range is the right oak.
The solid range is not listed for underfloor heating. Every engineered board in the range is, so a heated floor in Glasgow points to that range.
Keep the room climate steady, keep grit off the surface with a mat at the door, and clean it dry or barely damp. An oiled floor is re-oiled where it wears; a lacquered one is recoated when the film dulls. The care guides linked below take each finish in turn.
Wet weather outside matters less than when the floor is fitted. In a flat that has stood cold and damp, boards need longer in the room to reach the moisture content they will hold once it is heated — so a January fit wants more settling time than a July one, not less.
