The tenement hall in Hillhead or Langside is the room most Glasgow parquet is bought for, but the lounge with the bay window is the better one: broad enough for a Marlow block laid in basketweave or brick bond to read as a surface, with a solid base of levelled original boarding decked in plywood. The acoustic layer sits under the deck, and its depth is planned before the block thickness is chosen.
Over the heated screed at Dundashill and Hamiltonhill the block is the engineered Oxford construction. A Versailles panel needs a room broad enough to show several whole panels, which in Glasgow means a Pollokshields villa or a converted commercial floor in the Merchant City rather than a standard tenement room. In the conservation closes the original boarding stays beneath the new floor rather than coming out.

The Oxford Herringbone blocks come in two sizes, 90 x 450 mm and 125 x 600 mm, in natural, light, dark brown, fumed and whitewashed oak; Oxford Herringbone Light Oak is the one most often chosen for a hallway. The Knightsbridge Chevron Natural Brushed Oak cuts the block at an angle for the arrow pattern, and the Montpellier Oak Versailles Panel is the 800 x 800 mm panel for a dining room. All are engineered, tongue and groove, and listed for underfloor heating.

Over 77,000 Glasgow homes predate 1919 — about a quarter of the city's entire stock — and the defining type is the pre-1919 tenement. That single fact settles most flooring questions here. You are laying over timber joists with a neighbour underneath, so impact sound insulation is a requirement of the title deeds in most tenements, not a refinement. The original boarding under the carpet is usually sound but rarely level, so budget for levelling. In the Glasgow West, Dennistoun, Park and Strathbungo conservation areas, and in any listed tenement, that boarding is protected. Sighthill, Dundashill, Hamiltonhill and Wyndford are new build — screed, underfloor heating, engineered wood.
Glasgow’s housing stock is among the most architecturally impressive in the UK, from grand Victorian and Art Nouveau tenements in the West End and Shawlands to modern developments along the Clyde and substantial family homes in Newton Mearns and Bearsden. The city’s famous sandstone tenement flats have generous room proportions that suit wide-plank flooring beautifully.
A close stair turns tightly and the flat doors are original, so board length and total build-up are both constrained before a range is chosen. Ask for the pack length and the finished height at the quotation stage; a shorter format often solves on paper what would otherwise be solved by cutting on the landing.

Herringbone in the 90 x 450 mm block suits the hallways and front rooms of terraces and semis; the larger 125 x 600 mm block and the chevron suit longer rooms; a Versailles panel wants a square room with the space to show it. The engineered blocks in this range are glued down. A pattern floor holds its geometry through the adhesive; floated, the blocks drift. The rigid-vinyl herringbone is the click-together alternative where a glued floor is not wanted.
Manufacturers' guidance puts the waste allowance for herringbone or chevron at 15 to 20 percent, against 8 to 12 for a straight plank, because every cut at the perimeter produces an unusable offcut. The calculator on the site works with the real pack sizes.
