Glasgow · Scotland
16.1% of Glasgow households have at least two bedrooms more than they need, against 32.2% for Scotland, which ranks the city 150th of 150 towns. Homes with rooms to spare are the exception here. That does not change what a bedroom asks of its floor, only how many such rooms there are. The bedrooms guide says a bedroom asks so little of an engineered wood floor that a thinner wear layer is entirely sensible: it is the one room where paying for a thick layer buys almost nothing. Feet mostly arrive in socks rather than outdoor shoes. So the saving belongs in the bedroom, and the money it frees goes to the rooms that take the grit, the hall above all.
Bedroom in Glasgow
68.7% of Glasgow households live in a flat, 1st of 151 towns (Scotland: 34.4%). The flats guide treats the bedroom as the one room where carpet often stays, for the same reason a lease tends to prefer it: sound. A bedroom is where footsteps are heard at night, by you and by whoever lives below.
If you do change to a hard floor, the order of decisions changes too. In a flat in part of a converted or shared house, the bedroom sits on somebody's ceiling and impact sound travels through the joists, so the underlay matters more than the floor on top. 1.7% of Glasgow households live in a flat of that kind (Scotland: 1.6%).

Bedroom in Glasgow
Larger homes are less common in Glasgow than almost anywhere else among the towns: 25.4% of households have three bedrooms (Scotland: 34.6%, 149th of 150) and 8.1% have four or more (Scotland: 17.2%, 150th of 150).
In the homes that do have them, the bedrooms guide warns against flooring the whole house to one specification. A house done that way has overpaid upstairs and underspecified downstairs. The laminate guide says the same with abrasion ratings: one rating for the entire house is more than the bedrooms need and less than the hallway needs. Choose the bedroom floor for bedroom use and move the difference downstairs.
35.0% of Glasgow households rent from the council or a housing association and 16.9% rent privately, against 22.5% and 12.9% in Scotland. The laminate guide lists bedrooms and rentals turned round between tenancies among the places where laminate is the right answer, and the rentals guide counts bedrooms among the dry rooms where it is a reasonable budget choice.
45.7% of households own their home, against 62.3% for Scotland, 145th of 151 towns. For them the bedrooms guide adds a point about priorities: a bedroom floor is seen by the people who live with it far more often than by any buyer, so choose it for the feel underfoot at night rather than for a future sale.
The town centre records 34.9 days of air frost a year (1991 to 2020), below the median of 38.1 for the 151 towns. The bedrooms guide is cautious about solid wood upstairs: it needs an expansion gap, acclimatisation and stable humidity, and a bedroom heated in bursts and left cold overnight is not the kindest environment for it. A frosty night is when such a room gets coldest. Engineered wood, which the guide treats as the quiet default for bedrooms, is the less demanding choice.
What is under the bedroom depends on the age of the building. Drumchapel, Easterhouse, Castlemilk and Pollok are the large townships set up under the 1951 Development Plan, as Historic Scotland and the council record. The joists in a bedroom there, and the room below it, belong to a different period from a pre-war tenement, so find out what you are building on before choosing the underlay.

No. The bedrooms guide calls it the room where a thick layer buys almost nothing. Spare rooms are rare here, 16.1% of households having two or more, but a bedroom is still light use next to a hall.
Check the lease first, because a lease may prefer carpet in bedrooms for sound. 68.7% of Glasgow households live in a flat, where a bedroom floor can be the ceiling of the flat below.
Yes. Bedrooms are dry rooms, and the laminate and rentals guides both accept it there. 35.0% of Glasgow households rent socially and 16.9% privately.
No. One specification throughout overpays upstairs and underspecifies downstairs. 25.4% of Glasgow households have three bedrooms and 8.1% four or more.
