Kitchen Flooring in Leeds

17.9% of Leeds dwellings were built before 1919, below the 20.8% for England and Wales and 73rd of 141 towns. In a house that old the kitchen is one of the two rooms that may not stand on boards and joists. It may be quarry tiles bedded on concrete, and a floor like that can have no damp-proof membrane at all. That has to be established before anything is laid over it, and before a wood floor above all, because a slab without a membrane keeps giving moisture up into whatever covers it. Headingley Hill, West Park and the age of a kitchen subfloor

Kitchens are where LVT earns its place, and the subfloor under a kitchen differs with the age of the building. Leeds conservation area appraisals put dates on whole districts. The one for Headingley Hill, Hyde Park and Woodhouse Moor describes the premier suburb of Leeds of the mid 19th century, with sandstone villas and substantial terraces.

The West Park appraisal describes a planned Edwardian suburb whose first houses went up between the Ordnance Survey maps of 1892 and 1906. A kitchen in either district starts from the floor of its own era, which may have been altered since, so the date tells you what to look for rather than what you will find.
