Brushed and Oiled Engineered Oak Flooring

Every floor on this page is engineered oak whose listing gives both a brushed surface and an oil finish: 28 in the range on the catalogue of 20 October 2026, 19 planks and 9 parquet blocks. They are 12 to 20 mm thick with an oak wear layer of 2 to 6 mm, and all 28 are listed as compatible with underfloor heating.

The 28 brushed and oiled floors

The listings name four oil finishes: UV oiled (15), hard wax oil (10), invisible UV oiled (2) and invisible oiled (1). The brushing comes in three depths, as the listings describe it: brushed (18), deep brushed (9) and lightly brushed (1). All 9 deep brushed floors carry hard wax oil. The Wood Handbook of the US Forest Products Laboratory describes oils as penetrating finishes that leave the surface texture intact, where a film such as varnish is generally easier to clean (quoted below).

Choosing between them

Two figures in the table decide between them. The wear layer runs from 2 to 6 mm here, and Kährs, a manufacturer, says engineered floors can be sanded up to four times depending on its thickness (quoted below). The format sets the look: 9 parquet blocks laid as a pattern, or 19 planks with widths of 125 to 220 mm or wider. How an oiled floor is looked after, and where a lacquer suits a room better, is set out in the guide to oiled and lacquered floors.

BS EN 13489 — multi-layer parquet

BS EN 13489 is the product standard for multi-layer parquet elements, setting out their characteristics, requirements and test methods for internal use as flooring.

Oils and film finishes compared

The 2021 Wood Handbook of the US Forest Products Laboratory compares the two kinds of clear finish: film-forming finishes such as varnish are generally easier to clean and better at keeping wood from getting dirty than penetrating finishes such as oils, which leave the surface texture intact; films can protect against scratches and dents but are worn away by cleaning and abrasion, and floors need thicker, harder films.

“Smooth film-forming finishes, such as varnish, are generally easier to clean and better at preventing wood from getting dirty, compared with penetrating finishes such as oils that leave the surface texture intact. Films, especially when thicker, can also protect the wood from scratches and dents. Films often get worn away by repeated cleaning or by abrasion. Thicker, harder films are needed for high wear applications such as floors.”

How often a wood floor can be sanded

No trade-association or standards source found puts a number on how often an engineered wood floor can be sanded; the only sourced figure comes from a manufacturer, Kährs, which says engineered floors can be sanded up to four times depending on wear-layer thickness.

“Depending on the thickness of the wear layer, they can be sanded up to four times, extending their lifespan significantly.”

Cleaning — the manufacturers’ own guidance

For multilayer modular floor coverings the MMFA requires low-moisture cleaning methods and states that pooling of liquid on the floor must be avoided under all circumstances.

“Absolutely avoid ponding in any case!”

Acclimatisation before fitting

The Contract Flooring Association's guide states that the room should be at its in-service temperature 48 hours before installation so that the flooring can be kept in the room and reach room temperature before it is laid.

conditioning before installation48 h

“They also advise that this temperature should be attained 48 hours prior to the installation, so that floorings can be kept in the room and brought to room temperature (acclimatised) before installation.”
