18mm Oak Flooring: Solid and Engineered

27 oak floors in the range are 18 mm thick, on the catalogue of 20 October 2026: 19 solid oak and 8 engineered, multi-layer boards with an oak wear layer of 3 or 4 mm. The 8 engineered floors are listed as compatible with underfloor heating, the 19 solid ones as not compatible.

The 19 solid floors are 11 planks, 90 to 150 mm wide in random lengths (RL in the listing), and 8 parquet blocks from the Windsor and Marlow ranges. The 8 engineered floors are all parquet blocks from the Cambridge and Oxford ranges.

Solid or engineered at 18 mm

Underfloor heating decides it first, and the listings are clear about it. Over joists rather than a screed, BEAMA's underfloor heating guide says engineered boards under 20 mm should be fixed to additional decking unless the manufacturer states otherwise, which covers all 8 engineered floors here (quoted below). Beyond that, solid or engineered is a question of the room and the base, and the comparison guide sets it out.

BS EN 13226 — solid parquet elements

BS EN 13226 specifies the characteristics of solid parquet elements with grooves and/or tongues intended for internal use as flooring, covering elements with or without surface treatment.

“This European Standard specifies the characteristics of solid parquet elements with grooves and/or tongues for internal use as flooring. This standard is not applicable to panels made from elements for which a separate standard is in course of preparation.”

BS EN 13489 — multi-layer parquet

BS EN 13489 is the product standard for multi-layer parquet elements, setting out their characteristics, requirements and test methods for internal use as flooring.

Engineered boards under 20 mm over joists or battens

Unless installed over a screeded slab, engineered boards of less than 20 mm thickness should, according to BEAMA, be supported and fixed to an additional decking material for structural support, unless the manufacturer specifically states otherwise.

Wood over underfloor heating

UK trade-association guidance sets no blanket ban on wood over underfloor heating but ties it to a temperature limit, noting that some hardwood floor finishes are installed with a maximum floor surface temperature of 27 °C.
